So far, there are three ways that I have been able to get interview opportunities with finance companies:
Step 1) A Recruiter emailing me about a position that I should apply for
Step 2) Searching through google and a company’s website for internship opportunities
Step 3) Searching through my college’s career site
How to get Step 1 to happen:
1: Attend networking events
Read my blog post on networking events here
When you are at the networking event, make sure that you have the contact information of at least one recruiter and at least one employee of the company. Ask the recruiter what internship opportunities are available for you. If you are a sophomore, ask them whether they have internships for sophomores. Now you know.
2: Follow up with the recruiter and employee
Send an email to the recruiter thanking them for taking the time to talk with you and mention briefly what you talked about. Say how interested you are in the company and the specific role you want. Tell them that you would like to be updated with all their events (i.e. be on their mailing list for events)
3: Continue going to networking events
That is right – it doesn’t end there! Make sure they have seen your face several times, and go to the networking events to learn more about the companies
How to get Step 2 and Step 3 to happen:
Step 2 and Step 3 are pretty much self-explanatory. I recommend reading my ‘How to get a good internship‘ in order to keep track of all the companies that you will be searching through google and the career site.
